Apollo Lairbenos
Lot 2826
PHRYGIA. Hierapolis. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 15 mm, 2.50 g, 12 h), time of Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Radiate and draped bust of Apollo Lairbenos to right. Rev. ΙЄΡΑΠΟΛЄΙΤΩΝ Boukranion surmounted by crescent; above, two stars. BMC 2-3 ('Hieropolis'). RPC IV.2 online 2070 (4 specimens). Very rare. Minor deposits, otherwise, very fine.

The temple of Apollo Lairbenos was located some 30 km northeast of Hierapolis on a ridge above the Maeander river. While the radiate crown points towards a solar deity, epigraphic evidence suggests that the god was especially concerned with punishing stealing, the breaking of oaths, and the mistreatment of children
